embedding figures from files
Hi Folks,
I have a statistics program that I use to generate a set of files. Each file contains an individual figure. I can make those files be either pdf or png formats (I can do eps and ps too, but they're problematic, and Word seems to choke on them anyway). I would like to embed these files as figures in a Word document. I would like the option to update those figures if I've updated the external files (but I don't want Word to do it if I don't tell it to). Finally, I want to be able to send this document to other folks, and for them to be able to see the figures. Any idea if Word is capable of this with either pdf (preferrable) or png (acceptable) files? thanks! Word 2010 x32 Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 |

Word hangs inserting EPS pic/object
Hi Folks,
Related to my previous posting, I'm trying to insert eps pictures and objects into my Word 2010 doc (Insert|Picture and Insert|Object). When I insert the pic or object, word just hangs for a long time. I have Acrobat X and Illustrator CS5 installed, and there seems to be some strange interaction going on between Word and those programs. I've searched around, but haven't found anyone else having these frustrating problems. Am I the only one? thanks! Win 7 Pro x64 Adobe Master Collection CS5 Acrobat X Pro |

Hi luckycharms,
You can insert the pictures as links, via Insert|Picture with the 'link to File' option, which use INCLUDEPICTURE fields. You can lock such fields via Ctrl-F11 to prevent them from updating. Ctrl-Shift-F11 unlocks them. Sending the files to others may be problematic, especially if the fields are unlocked, as Word won't then be able to find the links. You could, of course, unlink the fields so that the sent documents don't have any links. With PDFs, you'd use Insert|Object. Do note, though that you'll only be able to see the first page of a PDF, unless you insert it as a clickable icon.

See attached. The info is pre-Office 2007, but is probably still largely relevant.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the help! Interesting that, when I insert a pdf object, the resolution seems quite bad, even though there are just vector graphics in it. Is that just a temporary rendering by word that will improve when printed or something, or do inserted pdf's get degraded? To get around the sharing problem for inserted pics, I'm thinking of "Insert and Link"ing them. |

Whether you're using Acrobat isn't the issue so much as making sure your EPS is compatible.

Word's documentation regarding "Insert and Link" is pretty clear that, if the linked file is not found, it will just use the embedded graphic. I just ran quick test: I "Insert and Linked" a picture, saved and closed the document, deleted the picture, and reopened the document. Hitting F9 didn't give me any problems, so I'm assuming that sharing docs made with "insert and link" will work ok. |
