Default Problem with leader tabs

Hi everyone,

I'm formatting a big document in Word 2013 and I haven't had any problems with placing the "......leader tabs" but now I can't seem to get the leader dots to appear!

It is very frustrating and I've tried adjusting various settings. To add the leaders at the moment I am doing the following:

Paragraph > Tabs > then setting the required alignment (18.5cm) on the right and ticking the appropriate fields > Set > Ok

Please can you help? are there any common reasons why this could be happening?

Thanks for your help,

Ollie

If there are multiple paragraphs involved you have to select them all before defining the tab stop.

Or you can modify the relevant style, if styles have been used consistently for the paragraphs that should have tabs and leaders.

I assume that by "appropriate fields" you mean setting it for a dot leader.

Probably, this is best done modifying or defining a style. Then applying the Style where you want the dot leaders.

I am assuming you are not creating a Table of Contents by hand. If you are, you are really trying to push string. How to create a table of contents in Microsoft Word

"pushing string" – a new idiom on me, but I'll add it to my lexicon next to "herding cats". That bit more succinct than "striking a match on a jelly" <g>

Thank you all for your help. Realised I just didn't really understand how it worked, so with a bit more understanding and your tips it's a lot easier....no longer "pushing string"! Don't worry not a table of contents just regularly need the spacer throughout doc.

Thanks again, Ollie

For more on tabs and tab stops in general, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/SettingTabs.htm.
