Default Can I Add Page Numbers in a Header in a Two-Column Document?

Hello. I'm using Office 2010 Home & Student, and have a question about Word.

I've created a list of items that I've converted into a two-column document. There was no difficulty doing that. The document is three pages long.

Now, I need to create a header for it. As of now, that's done. But I also want to number the pages. I'd prefer to have the page numbers inside the header. I have NO idea how to do that.

I did a little bit of research on Google to find out how to do this, but the information doesn't seem to help. One answer was to tab to the right hand side of the header text, choose Page Number, and then select Current Position. Unfortunately, that option is greyed out and unavailable.

Another answer was to tab to the right side of the header text, select Quick Parts, then select Field, then select Page from the list. The FIELD option in the Quick Parts menu is greyed out.

If I simply try to add a page number anywhere in the header text, the header is obliterated, and replaced just with a page number.

So, as of right now, I have no idea what to do, or even if adding a page number within the header is possible with Word 2010.

If anyone knows any viable alternatives, would you be willing to assist me? I'd appreciate it and would be grateful. Thank you! Jd

Default Header

The question is why your options are greyed out. I have attached an example of what you're talking about, easily created. Turn on hidden characters, if you like, to see the tab. The page number is an auto numbering page number field. It will apper on a grey background if you have field shading checked in your options (Options/Advanced/show Document Content/Field shading).

The page columns should have no effect on what goes on in the header. Did you type the other text into the header without a problem?

I think I might have left out some pertinent information.

The header I selected was "Alphabet," which is the third choice down in the header list. When I used that header, I was unable to include a page number.

I deleted that header, then put in a new, blank header. I then typed in some text, and after that, I tried inserting a page number.

I had no trouble inserting the page number, using the Current Position option.

Next, I deleted that header, and tried using the Alphabet header again, just to see what would happen. Again, I was unable to add a page number. The menu items I mentioned previously were once again greyed out.

My conclusion from this is the Alphabet header doesn't support or permit page numbers inside it. Either that, or there's a bug.

I'll go ahead and use the plain, blank header for the time being. In the meantime, is it possible for you, or anyone else reading this, to see if a page number can be entered into the Alphabet header?

Thank you for assisting! Jd

You can insert the Alphabet header, but it is a content control, which does not allow inserting a field. However, once created, you can right click the content control, select "Remove content control", and then be free to insert your page number, leaving the header and brwon border as well.
