Default symbols beside text like in onenote?

in onenote, you can press ctrl and 1, ctrl and 2, ctrl and 3, etc to make certain symbols appear to the left of the line you are typing. is there any way to do this in microsoft word? i know i can insert a symbol, but i am trying to figure out if it is possible to get it essentially in the margin.

more specifically, i am making an outline using indents, and i would like to put a star (or something) next to the really important points. since i am using indents, there is often a significant amount of space to the left where a symbol could fit. however, i can't click on that space and enter a symbol. ugh. i am already using bold, italics, and larger type for other things, so i dont want to use those to denote these important points. tyia

eta: i'm using office 2010

If you have defined a hanging indent, as opposed to simply a left indent, there is room for inserting a symbol at the very left of the paragraph.

if i am using the automatic outline format, is that a left indent? i am pressing the tab key. the automatic format looks like this:

I)
a)
1)

i get it to go from I) to a) by pressing enter then the tab key....i am assuming, then, that they are left indents rather than hanging indents.

eta: oops, it is not showing the spacing correctly. the 'a)' is supposed to be one tab in and the '1)' two tabs in

The various multilevel numbering formats make use of a hanging indent; the difference is that the symbol/number and the tab character after the symbol are added automatically. "Standard" hanging indents that you create manually would require you to tab after you added the first symbol/number/text.
