Default reference previous heading1

How can I refer to the previous occurance of text of Heading 1. Eg. Heading 1 ="step 1" is used on page 2 and I need to reference "step 1" on all following pages until heading 1 = "step 2", then reference "step 2" on following pages until heading 1 changes again. This "previous heading reference" needs to be in the header of all pages.

In the header, insert a STYLEREF field which points to the number of the current Heading 1 style. Activate the header and then use Insert tab | Quick Parts | Field.

this works great it there is not a new "Heading 1" on the current page, in which case it returns this heading and not the previous heading from the previous page. Thanks

Yes, it always displays the "current" heading. As a workaround, you can force each Heading 1 style to start a new page. In the Modify Style dialog box, click Format, click Paragraph, and then choose the "Page break before" option.

Default reference to previous style solved

This drove me crazy until I figured out how to trick Word info referencing the previous style heading and not the heading on the current page. I figured out that if the Style Ref field was in the body of the doc, it would look backwards and ref the previous style as I wanted, but then it moved around as I add text before it and presents the same problem I have now. So I put the Style Ref field in a text box with absolute position .8” from the Top Margin and drew the header box so the bottom of the table in the header is below it and it looks like it’s part of the header but behaves like part of the body and does not move with text and behaves like I need.

Interesting approach. Many fields don't work when you put them in text boxes, so I didn't dare to try such a thing. :-)

Note, however, that using a STYLEREF in a text box may not be backward compatible (if you share the document with other people using older versions of Word).
