Default Problems with the Normal Style when applied to a document.

When I begin to edit a raw document, a converted ebook for example, I like to apply a customized Normal Style before I begin cleaning it up. The italic words in the document stay italicized, but not when the whole paragraph is italics. When the paragraph is all italics, it changes it to whatever is set in the Style. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Mostly I start editing with <ctrl>-a and manually format the text so everything is at my default. But after I start changing chapter headings and such, it's much easier to make changes if everything is in a Style.

Consider using Word's AutoFormat feature first. It may help. Adjust the AutoFormat settings, first.

The behavior you describe is the way Word works. If more than half of the paragraph has certain formatting applying a style ignores that formatting.

Thanks for the help. I didn't discover this "feature" until I'd already messed up almost half a dozen documents. At least I know to watch out for it.

By the way, consider applying the Body Text style instead of the normal style.

It occurs to me that you may be using a version of Word that doesn't show the AutoFormat command easily.
