Default Word: have to click mouse before typing -- why?

Hello, trying to figure out a problem my boss is having. He needs to click the mouse when he opens a new Word document before he is able to type. (Otherwise, when he types, nothing happens.) Can someone please help me find a way that he can just type directly when he opens a new document? This isn't happening to anyone else here...

He is using Word 2007 and the OS is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

Thank you!
