Can anyone tell me how I can do this?
Is it also possible that the counter alters during typing?

in your answer I can't seem to find a method to display (in the document, nog in the statusbar) the number of characters within one section in my word document. Not in the whole document.
Preferably: as a variable also displayed in the text.
Is this possible?

Hi Luc,

With the technique in the link, the count can be gained for whatever text you select, but that isn't inserted into the document. Word doesn't have any built-in tools for inserting a character count or word count for a section into the document. You could do this with a macro, but the number would be just plain text and wouldn't update. And, once it's inserted as plain text, updating that number becomes problematic.
