Default How to insert a line BEFORE a table in Word2007?

I have a document in Word2007 which contains as first element a table.

Now I want to insert a line just BEFORE this table.
This is not obvious because I cannot set the cursor BEFORE the table and simply hit RETURN.

The topmost possible position of the cursor is the first cell of the table.

So how else can I enter lines before the table?

Peter

I expect you mean a line of text, not a line ______________.

If I am wrong, you could put a top border on the table.

If you need a line of text, select the entire table.
Copy it. Delete it. Type your text and press Enter. Paste your table back in.

To insert a line of text, place the insertion point at the very beginning of the first cell (that is, to the left of the first text character) and press Enter. This adds an empty paragraph above the table.

Sorry, this does NOT work.

Furthermore I cannot believe that cut+delete+reinsert (as suggested in the posting before) is the only way.

It is the only way I know, and it does work. I just learned a long time ago to not begin a Word document with a table.

There is probably a vba programming solution but I've never bothered to figure one out because the manual solution gets the job done.

You probably have set the text wrapping to "Around" (in the Table Properties dialog box), in which case the behavior will be more unpredictable.

In an ordinary table it certainly works, and it has done so since (at least) Word 97.

I don't know how it works if you have a right-to-left language enabled, but I'd guess it involves the right-most table cell (of the first row).

Welcome to the board!

Regarding your post, unless there's already content before the table, Ctrl-Shift-Enter does no more than Enter on its own does. The issue with which this thread was concerned is where there isn't already content before the table. On any row other than the first, Ctrl-Shift-Enter splits the table, whereas Enter simply inserts a paragraph break in the current cell.

Default Bu tit works!

Sorry butyou said CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER doesn't work, but it does! I have used it in older versions of Word, and I just tested it again now, and it still works

Ctrl+Shift+Enter inserts a column break, which you may or may not want. Pressing only Enter should suffice. Just make sure that the insertion point is at the very beginning of the first cell in the first row of the table (not even a space character must precede the insertion point).

You quite evidently haven't paid attention to what I actually posted. I said nothing of the kind.
