I've been sent a .docx file in which the Note style automatically prepends the word Note: before the insert point. This is good, I like it, and I can create that style easily in Framemaker.

However, I cannot see how this was achieved in Word™. Using the style inspector, I see that the style is bulleted which makes me think the word 'Note:' is a special form of bullet. How is that style actually created?

Hi Stu,

It's probably a custom number format. To check, click on the affect paragraph, then on the numbering button on the Home tab.

Thanks for the response, macro. No, the display of 'Recently used number formats' shows nothing of interest.

When I select the paragraph, it's the bulleted list button that "lights up," not the numbered list btn. Nothing useful in there either. I'm still stumped.

If you set up a multilevel list, you can simply add some static text in the "Enter formatting for number" in the multilevel dialog box. Be sure to set the "Number style for this level" to "(none)." Don't forget to select your style name in the "Link level to style" drop down.

To display the dialog box, place the insertion point in a paragraph to which your style has been applied. On the Home tab, click Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. For more, see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html.

Hi Stu,

If you can post a document with the 'word' bullets, I'd be happy to take a look at it.

Thanks for the offer but it's a client document and I'm sure I signed a non-disclosure agreement at some point. I've played with Stefan's idea and, although it isn't yet working with perfection, I can see that it's a correct approach.

What, specifically, is not working then?

Got it now. That "Link level to style" option was the key. Thankyou lots.
