Default Word 2003 - Autocorrect/text

I have been using Word 2003 for years and now all of a sudden whenever I enter anything in autocorrect or autotext it will not hold, meaning whenever I go back to use my entry it won't work. After I enter it, I check to see if it is there and it is, but the next day when I open Word up again it is not there. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Pam,

Try repairing Word (Help|Detect & Repair). If that doesn't work, try the approaches suggested here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
for various troubleshooting steps that will help you track down (and hopefully solve) the problem.

its best to uninstall then re-install , repairing might not find the bug ...

There is very little that uninstalling & reinstalling can fix that a repair won't. The link I posted addresses numerous issues that uninstalling & reinstalling won't fix.

Default auto correct/text

Hi ~ I tried the repair and detect thing and it didn't work, but I think there is another problem going on and I don't know how in the world it happened. It goes like this - I am in word and add something to auto correct or auto text and when I go to close down Word, I get this "Word cannot save changes to the global template because it was opened with read-only access. Do you want to save changes in a template with a different name?"

I work for a medical transcription company and I am always opening documents in the read-only access so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not ~

I am at a loss and would love it if I could get this thing working?

Hi Pam,

There are three possible issues here:
1. That you're opening a template for editing, instead of a document;
2. The document is based on a template that's been given a read-only file attribute (this could happen if, for example, it's been copied from a CD); or
3. Word's 'Normal' template has been corrupted somehow. The link I posted has some steps you can take to check that. See under 'Rename the Normal.dot or Normal.dotm global template file'. Note that this is one of the things that neither repairing Word nor uninstalling/reinstalling would fix.

Another possibility is something blocking saving changes to normal.dot. This could be an IT policy but is more likely a poorly written Add-In.

Try running Word without Add-Ins to see if it helps.
Tools > Templates and Add-Ins

If it does help, enable the Add-Ins one at a time to find out which one is causing the problems. Then decide how much you really want whatever that Add-In does.
