Using Table Of Contents
I wish to make a table of contents so that each header in different sections will appear. In section 1 at the beginning I have gone to Insert/references/automatic table of Contents version 2. Then in section 2 I have ckicked on the header and applied style header 1. In section 3 I have clicked on the header and applied header style 1. However they do not appear in my TOC in section 1. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Chris,
Have you updated the TOC (eg do a print preview or Ctrl-A, F9)?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have updated the TOC and nothing happens. I think there must be something else I need to do. The TOC is in section 1. The first header is in section 2 and the second header is in section 3. It seems the TOC cant see the headers in the other sections. I have applied style header 1 to these headers.

Hi Chris,
Unless you specifically tell a TOC not to, it defaults to gathering data from all Sections. What happens if, in Section 1, you press Ctrl-F9 to create a pair of field braces (ie '{}'), type 'TOC' between them, then press F9?

Thanks for your reply. I have found the reason the TOC does not work. It seems that the TOC cannot see anything in the headers by default. So as a solution I will copy the information in the headers as a separate heading.
There also might be a work around someone showed me although I have not tried it yet: http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/StyleRef.htm I also got an error message when trying to use a hyperlink in the TOC: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I found the solution here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310049 Kind Regards Chris |

Yes, TOCs only pick up headings etc in the body of the document. The STYLEREF field can be used to pick up the content of a given Style in the body of the document and replicate it in the header or footer.
As for using hyperlinks in the TOC, TOCs are hyperlinked by default, even though they don't look like hyperlinks, and there should be no need to try to add them manually. In any event, even if you do add them manually, they'll be deleted next time the TOC is updated.

A heading is text that is in the document, usually formatted using a heading style. Confusing, yes. |
