Default Search/Find Down Arrow Suddenly Not Working

Strange problem: Running Word 2010 on Vista Home Basic. Up until this week, the Search/Find feature has been working perfectly. I type in a search term, it highlights all and I can use the up and down arrows to step to the next instance in the document. This week, something strange happened.

First, I will type in a search term and it will highlight all of them, but as soon as I go to use the down arrow to step through them, it stays on the instance it's presently on and won't go down. Also, all the yellow highlighting of the instances the cursor is not currently on disappear. And, each time I hit the arrow, there is a little flicker of yellow on the other instances visible on the page, but the highlighting won't move to the next instance. I CAN, however, use the UP arrow and it will step backward like it's supposed to, but the yellow highlighting still only appears as a brief flicker when I hit the arrow, but disappears otherwise.

Second, if I open the document, perform the search and nothing else, and then go to close it, it asks me if I want to Save changes I've made when I haven't made any. Sort of like the infamous Save prompt after one prints a Word document.

Third, when I open up Options and choose "Incremental Find," if after I close it and then reopen it, the Incremental Find is not retained. I have to go and reset it.

All strange behavior from something that was working perfectly before. There's a part of me that feels it's an issue with the .dotx template (which is why it's prompting me to save and not retaining my Search options), but I don't see how that relates to not being able to step through with the down arrow...is it a virus? I've run a full virus scan and found nothing. I've tried to run the MS Office Repair and it made no difference. I'm at a loss...

Thanks.

Hi Neil,

Do note that the 'Find' panel sometimes misbehaves in a document with endnotes (ie you select an endnote entry and nothing happens). This mainly seems to affect documents with content after the endnotes, when that content is visible.

Have you tried repairing your Word installation? With Word 2010, you do this via 'Progrms & Features' in the Windows Control Panel. Beyond that, try the approaches suggested here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...artingWord.htm and
http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...hp/32641/page2
for various troubleshooting steps that will help you track down (and hopefully solve) the problem.

Thanks for the reply, macro. I am not using endnotes, and I have tried the repair via Programs and Features. Still no change. I even discovered the malware searchqu through trying to figure it out, cleaned that out, and STILL the problem persists. What's so strange is that it worked fine for a month and a half, I've applied no recent Office or Windows updates (though I have applied Office 2010 SP1) and yet, last week, this was just suddenly broken.

There was a point last week where I was trying to bring one Word doc back from Minimize while hitting another to do some editing, which seemed to make the program do some weird hiccup, but what that could've done to the Find functionality is beyond me...

Hi Neil,

From what I've seen document, I doubt searchqu had any effect on Word's Find function. Other than, perhaps a rogue addin, the problem suggests som damage to Word itself. The links I posted have instructions that should help to get the problem fixed.

Yeah, I agree that searchqu wouldn't affect that. The third of the links you gave looks like an especially good way to methodically work through the issue. Will do so over the weekend and post results. Thanks.

Well, I found the problem. In working through the steps in the third link, I found that I had recently installed a Word plugin for a piece of software I was running and, sure enough, after removing that plugin (Mendeley-1.3.2.dotm), the functionality of the Find/Replace returned to normal. I let the developers of the software know of my problem. Thanks for the help macropod!
