Different column numbers, but same place on page -- what is going on?! Help
I do audio transcription for a company and I am using word 97, which works fine for me, but the template that they give me for these legal transcripts contains a contents page that indicates where certain testimony begins. At the left margin is the content descriptor, and then after some tabs is the page number where it begins. The problem that is driving me crazy is that even when I vertically align the page numbers on the right side, the column number indicator is different, and when I'm handing them in, they're telling me to vertically align the page numbers, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ALGINED IN MY DOCUMENT They think that there may be a problem with the transfer to the newer version of word they're using (but they're not sure), and I want to find out for myself how I can fix this.
I thought that it might be problem with the tabs or something, so I got rid of them and just used the space bar, but the same problem is there. Can someone tell me what is going on here? This is so frustrating. It looks right on my end, but for some reason, it doesn't on theirs, and I want to improve this or let them know that I cant' fix it because it may be out of my control. Please help me. Correction -- just now I looked at my document, and the column numbers are the same after I got rid of the tabs. So can someone tell me what the tabs do and how they affect column number? |

Without at least seeing the document, it's impossible to diagnose. The simplest explanation is that you're Word installation uses a different printer driver (Word uses the printer driver to work out how best to lay out the document). If you install the same printer driver as your client uses, and make that the active one for your transcripts, you should see the same formatting that your client sees. You don't need to actually have such a printer - you're simply telling Word what printer to format the document for.

I don't think it's the printer driver -- I mean the display on the screen.

As I said, Word uses the printer driver to determine how to lay the document out. Naturally, that affects how it appears on screen as well, since what's on screen is supposed to reflect what will be printed.
