Hello all,
I have a quick question that has me stumped on what to try next. I have a document I am creating with several screen prints pasted into the Word document. I have resized most of these to focus on particular areas of the screen making them much smaller. The file size has grown substantially since each image was cropped from a full screen copy. I have used the advanced feature "discard editing data" and clicked OK... saved the document but it's not reducing the file size at all. Moreover I can select an image in my file and use the option "reset picture and size" from the picture tools menu and still retrieve the original image, even after closing and opening the document again. Is there a step I'm missing? These images were previously existing in the document before I changed the setting to discard, but my understanding was that using this option would remove original data from all pictures that already exist in the document as well. I can't find any additional information on the internet abroad about this and wasn't able to turn up a search result on these forums about it either. I apologize if this has been previously discussed. Any help or advice on what to try would be greatly appreciated. I have a rough draft my employer would like to see over the weekend for review and as it stands right now the file size it too large to email. Thanks for your time and assistance with this! ![]() |

Hi Ravenant,
If the deleted data from a cropped image remains in the file after saving & closing when you have the 'discard editing data' option set, that suggests there's a fault in your Word installation. Try repairing it via the 'Programs & Features' applet in the Windows Control Panel.

Hi macropod,
Thanks for the reply. I will try this and post back if it was successful in correcting the issue or not. Sorry about the delay as well, I either didn't get an email letting me know there was a response to the question or I missed it somehow. I'll let you know how it goes, thanks for the info! |

Hello all,
Just wanted to report back, better late than never. We had some emergency work come in at work and haven't been able to return to this word manual until yesterday. Reinstalling the program doesn't seem to correct the issue. I have tried reinstalling twice and even moved the file off of my computer and tried it with a copy of the file and same result. I can set the discard setting in Word, save, close and reopen the file and it will not decrease in size or delete the original file content. It turned out the solution was that I have to select "Compress picture" from the picture tools menu bar and from it's pop up select to delete cropped area and set a resolution etc and then uncheck "apply only to this image" It appears to be the identical choices from the advanced menu but for whatever reason this toolbar "compress picture" selection is the one that words, not the document options in the advanced menu. Hope someone else finds this helpful if they run into a similar issue. ![]() |
