Default Word Margins and Generalia

Oh how I hate MS Word. I once had an old dog, that I could say "sit" and the dog stayed there. I just wish the margins in MS Word were half as well behaved. They jump around all over the place.

I had my margins set just the way I wanted them to list some bulleted items, as A. B. C. etc. Did just fine until I got down to I (the letter between H and J), then the margins developed a mind of their own. I finally figured out that Word was interpreting that as a Roman Numeral "I", and there was no way out of it. I finally used my math program (Math Type) to insert a one character equation, "I". That worked, but I should not have had to do that.

When I get a new version of Word, the first thing I do is turn off ALL automatic features. They invariably guess wrong about what I want to do, then try to force me to do it anyway.

There have been several news items recently about forthcoming driverless automobiles. My thought, invariably, is, "If you like the automation features in MS Word, you will LOVE driverless automobiles."

Why does these imperfections and undesirable traits persist in MS word. Because the ivory-tower developers don't care a bit about what users want. They just want to change the way things are done (invariably done in a worse way than before) and add a bunch of new features that nobody needs anyway, just so they can get out a new edition.

Oh how I hate MS Word.

Now that you've vented your spleen, perhaps you'd care to take a little time studying Templates and Styles, and how to create and modify them.

For Templates, see:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/wo...in=HA010237355
http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/templates
http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/te...010237355.aspx

For Styles, see:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...010230882.aspx

There are many more web pages that offer advice on these things too.

As for your automobile analogy, I doubt you ever got a licence to drive one without learning how to do so (and not be a menace on the roads) beforehand ...
