Default Roman numbering

I've visited the page number field in a Table of Contents and selected roman numbering; repeatedly, in fact. The "where you are" slider obliging shows roman numerals, but the footer stubbornly doesn't. Is there anything special I need to know?

To control the format of page numbers, use the Page Number Format dialog box.

To display the dialog box, first activate the header/footer view by double-clicking the header. On the Header & Footer Tools Design tab, click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers.
