Default MS Word Not Saving Correctly

This has happened to me in the past and it is happening to me again, would love to understand why.

I open an existing Word Document, it is not an old document, it could have been made 3 days ago. Nothing in the document but some text and an image for my company's logo.

Make a few text changes to Word document and then tell it to close. It asks if I want to save changes, I say "Yes". Then it asks me what to name the file. Well, the file already has a name, it is an existing document. I would have to name it something different and I do not wish to do that.

So I close document, re-make changes, close it and it works fine.

Seems like I am doing that with every Word file I open for the last few days.

Any ideas?

Hi Tennis4you,

A few possibilities come to mind:
1. The original document was saved as a Word template (dotx/dotm extension) instead of as a document (docx/docm extension);
2. The original document was made a read-only file (possibly when saved); and
3. A faulty Word installation.

You should be able to check the first & second fairly easily. For the third, try repairing Word via 'Programs and Features' in the Windows Control Panel.

Looks like it is a .doc document. I wonder if it is older than I thought. I created it in a folder 8 months ago and just copy it into new folders as I go... Has not been a problem until recently.

Hi Tennis4you,

Sounds like you should be using a template, though that's not what the problem is here. If the file has been copied off a CD, will have acquired a read-only attribute when previously copied to that media.

Well, I did not copy from a CD. it's just a file I made 8 months ago that goes into every project folder I have (I have about 200). It was not a problem until a week ago. And I find it odd that if I close it and then open it again it saves fine.

I will say that I changed the sharing on my pc to allow another pc access to the main work folder that all of these files are in. Would that be an issue?

Have you tried repairing Word?

Hi Tennis4you,

Are any other applications similarly affected?

No, just Word. This has happened to me before at my previous company too. It eventually went away.

I find it weird that after I open the file, try to do some work and then close it, then open it again, it acts normal.

Hi Tennis4you,

OK. Try the approaches suggested here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541 and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...artingWord.htm
for various troubleshooting steps that will help you track down (and hopefully solve) the problem.
