Convert error docx--> doc: You cannot put drawings into a text box, callout, comment,
I have got a large *.docx document which I load into Word 2007.
For compatibility reasons I have to save it as *.doc When I try to save the loaded *.docx manually as *.doc Word tells me "You cannot put drawing objects into a text box, callout, comment, footnote, or endnote" ....and rejects the save :-( No further hint was given WHICH object is the culprit. Furthermore there seems to be no fault tolerant conversion which tries to make an adjustment. Is there no other way to process the conversion? maybe there is a good smart docx-to-doc converter utility elsewhere outside of Word? Thank you Peter |

Word 2010 Errors
I have the same problem. Document has origins dating to 1996 and is currently 342 pages long with more than 900 footnotes. I have recently switched from Word 2003 to Word 2010 and cannot save in new format. In response to error message, have deleted all graphic objects yet when searching for graphics objects search reports that 2 exist. Curiously, when searching, both objects appear to be located a single footnote. They are definitely not evident! Have deleted footnote to no avail. As far as I can tell I do not have any text boxes, callouts (?), or endnotes.

It's possible the offending shape is transparent or so small you can't see it. It's also possible the offending shape has been positioned outside the page area. Here is a macro that you can use with any of your documents. Basically, it looks for any shapes that are positioned to the left of the page boundary and repositions them so you can see them. It also makes very small shapes (height + width < 12pt) large enough to be more apparent.
Code:
Sub ShowShapes() Dim Shp As Shape, Rng As Range With ActiveDocument For Each Rng In .StoryRanges On Error Resume Next For Each Shp In Rng.ShapeRange If Shp.Left < 0 Then Shp.Left = 0 Shp.ZOrder msoBringToFront End If If (Shp.Height + Shp.Width) < 12 Then Shp.Height = 12 If Shp.Width < 12 Then Shp.Width = 12 End If Next Next End With End Sub

Macro did not positively identify offending character (actually in footnote below the one I had deleted previously based on Find graphics function) but the increased spacing as per your comments caught my eye. Unable to delete the 'space' so cut & pasted footnote to Notepad and back into doc again and problem fixed! The offending character was in text copied from a website years ago. Thanks!

The macro doesn't try to 'identify' anything - it simply makes potential problem shapes easier for you to identify, which is what I gather it achieved.
