Header & Footer Question - Help Need!
Hey Everyone,
Am new to the forum and seeking for your help! Am writing a essay using Microsoft Word 2007 and would like to know is there any way of changing the footer or header of each page? As right now whatever is in-putted is consistent on each page? Hope this makes sense Thank You Valentino R. |

A document must first be divided into sections in order to create a different header or footer for part of a document.
1. Insert a section break where you want to start a new section that contains a different header or footer.
3. On the View menu, click Header and Footer. 4. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Link to Previous Button image to break the connection between the header and footer in the current section and the previous section. Now, if you edit the header/footer of the current section, the previous section won't change. |

Would someone please help me with this matter?
I am using Word 2007 to create a 5 sections document with different header. However the cover sheet needs to be different also.
I followed the instruction posted on this forum. I originally used "Page Layout", "Break", "Next Page". That did not work, as I think this command is used for "two" sections only. Then I followed the same but use the command "Page" under the "Break" menu. That did not work either. Also, I could not find the command "Link to Previous" . What am I doing wrong? |

Hi Kenravon,
If you put the cursor after your text on the first page, then go to page layout, break continuous. Then got to the next page, double click in the header area on that page (so that it activates the header & footer tools) look for the section of the ribbon labeled navigation, and deselect link to previous. I think this might work for you! |

Dear KST,
Thank you for responding. I followed your instructions, then I removed all the headers and tried to insert one header at a time. It put the first header in entire 5 sections. I looked into the page layout and the "Break" tab was not highlighted for me to select to do another section. It seems that it needs to be in a specific order. Is it possible for you to send me a separate e-mail, so I can send you this file and perhaps I can call you to go over this process step by step? |

I think the problem your having is trying to use a automated method of doing things and expecting the flexibility as of you were to do it manually.
Headers and footer were designed to eliminate the need to manually redo redounded information. So if your header and footer changes often you may want to take a different approach. If you have a 50 page document in which you your header/footer change 5 times through out. then create 5 templates and insert as "Text from file" or "embedded object" with the " Link to File" selected. "Link to File" is useful when you want to insert an object multiple times in a document and be able to just modify the object template in which the results will then appear in all the document where the object has been inserted. NOTE: If you do not check the "Link to File" check box then the object will be inserted and become detached from the actual file. So if you later change the object template, the object on your page will not be affected. This gives you automation and the flexibility that I think you are seeking. The object command are in the "Insert Menu" and then click on "Object" Paul |

Dear Paul,
Thank you for your help. When you say the "automated" method, I am assuming that you are talking about "insert" command with predefined headers. Based on this understanding, first I clicked where the headers are on the document and removed all headers to start fresh. Then I just typed on page 2 header of the document, and I saw that this header appears on every section! Microsoft has option to do different first page, even and odd pages. I wish they also had this option to have different headers on different page. That is the wishful thinking that is not going to get me where I want. By the way, I also wanted to insert my logo on top of each page on the header space. The logo is in jpg, and the "insert" and then "object" command, just listed the source rather than the actual picture! Is it possible for me to send this document to you and I can call you on the phone to go over the instruction you listed here? Happy Holidays, Ken |

HI! I looked at your document and I am not sure how to go about it as it depends on your objective. personally if its only 6-7 pages I would do it manually. meaning without header and footer.
If your assignment calls for the use of headers then look at the help section titled "Make the header or footer different in each section or chapter" As for you logo, just make it part of your header. Insert Picture when creating/editing your header. Paul D |

Hi Kenravon,
You need to copy and paste your logo into the header instead of inserting it. Paul's idea to look at the help section titled "Make the header or footer different in each section or chapter" is your best bet. The instructions I gave you would need to be performed on every page because I think the default setting is to always link to the previous Header/Footer. Hope this helps! Let us know. KsT |
