Default FileError_22001 - New virus??

[Admin note] Verified solution has been posted by strij on page 2.

Since Saturday, November 29/08 all of my Word and Excel documents display this message when I open them and the author of each document has been changed to Yanni with a creation date of Nov. 29. I took my laptop to a virus expert yesterday and he has not been able to trace the source of the problem or remove it - he is totally stumped!! When I first found it on Monday there were only 3 posts on the internet about this error message and this has now grown to 3 pages. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing and have you found an explanation or solution? I had McAfee protection software which has obviously been totally useless. My expert tells me that now new viruses come in on the backside of cookies when you open infected websites and that none of the anti-virus software companies have any way to stop it. I opened a site on Saturday afternoon which Yahoo said it had checked and was "safe" but it didn't look right and I think this is when the trouble started

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I appear to have lost 90% of what was on the laptop.

Cheers!
Carolyn

This is a new virus which started since one week ago, it infects computers through web pages, anti-virus software should be able to detect it and give you a warning when you view the infected websites. But there are no solutions yet if your computer has been infected.

My computer has this problem too. It appears to wipe out all .doc, .xls, .jpg, and .txt files on a computer and replaces them all with files that say "FileError_22001". Malwarebytes (Malwarebytes.org) has a scanning tool that seems to remove the virus, but it does not restore the lost files.

On my machine, the lost files appear to have been relocated in two directories, where they seem to have been scrambled and renamed with the file extension ".fcd". The directories containing these files are:
\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\CDD, and
\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\FLR.

Again, I have not seen any method posted for restoring the lost files, but it does appear that this should be possible. My guess is that the virus was intended to scramble people's critical data files so that the perpetrator could extort money out of users by selling the "solution".

Default I know what the files are!

I followed your location to the scrambled files... if you "import" them in to Word, the first line in the file tells you the original location and name of the file.

EG: in the CCD folder, the file called "fcd1A00" has the first line as "wamba00000050C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Clipart\corpbas\J0078849.JPG"

I'll try to restore it somehow and post up. Looks like a one-by-one restore may be the only solution.

*sigh*

New here and feel your pain! I have been fighting numerous viruses for the past week and a half. The virus softwares would not clean up one called "RootKit.zlob" Malwarebytes would just sit there and do nothing. I believe this was because the Backdoor Trojan I received during a Buffer Overflow set many of the important files "Permissions" to the hacker. The only way I could remove these files was to reset permissions and then I could delete. Anyway after getting my system back up in somewhat decent shape I noticed I too have the FileError_22001 on a ton of my hard worked and time consuming documents. Here is something I picked up off the web on the .fcd file. Looks like the hacker created CD-ROM files for what was once our .doc and other type documents. Just need to figure out how to convert or read them. FYI-the .fcd files and some registry changes indicate that this problem may be using some old protocols (Legacy and .fcd) that our virus programs are not looking for or just overlooking them because they think the programs are legit.

I'm gonna keep plucking away at this and see what I can come up with.

FYI-when looking at the document encoding it's coming up as Japanese??

FCD File Extension - Open .FCD files

Default FileError22001

I am having the same problem. I was looking for TIVO information on Yahoo and clicked on a website, and the next thing I knew, everything went bad. All my .xlsx, .docx and .jpg are all corrupted.

I went on line with McAfee and of course, they know nothing about it, just stated that virus protection is not 100 % perfect. Maybe my payment should not be 100%.

I used system restore and then reloaded Mcafee. I still cannot get my old files, but none of my new files get infected.

Someone has to be able to figure this out!. It is aggravating that we pay good money for virus protection and some jerk can back door us. I really dont care about my .xls and .doc files, it is my treasured pictures that I care about.

You would thing that someone can figure something out.

A new twist...

Last night, I went to Windows Update and there was nothing to update.

Today, there are several updates for Windows XP and Microsoft 2007. So obviously, Microsoft is aware of the problem. There has to be someone who at Microsoft, who can figure out how to get our files back to normal.

Default FileError_22001

I got this virus on Dec. 1, Boy can one person drive alot of people crazy!
I have mcafee, I purchased iolo recovery, and I paid for a six month tech through microsoft just to get my .doc and .xls files back, with no such luck, after two days on remote the tech tells me that there's no fixing it. Boy I hope he's wrong! There has to be someone out there that can retrieve our files, even the person that created the virus, I'll even pay them to reverse the files. The files is still on the hard drive listed as either a cdd file or flr file. anti malware doesn't fix it, spyware doesn't fix it and mcafee doesnt fix it either.
Anyone out there that holds the cure! Please help!
