Default Macros and Themes

I'm at a loss as to what is going haywire with my Word 2011, which I'm running on a iMac desktop with Lion.

I have been trying to create a new theme. I call up a blank document, click the Themes button, select the theme that I want, and then save as blank.dotx. Close Word and then reopen. But it doesn't open with the new theme. It opens with the old theme which I want to replace. Plus, all my macros have disappeared. What's going on here?

You need to set the selected theme as the default in Word; then you'll see it as you start the application or create a new, blank document.

If the macros are in Normal.dotm, you don't need them to be in the document; the macros will be accessible whenever Word is open.

That's what I figured but it isn't working. I copied my normal.dotm from my desktop (that has the macros embedded), opened it on the mac probutt he macros are not there.Do I have to install the macros themselves in the Word version on the laptop?

Where to did you copy the Normal template? Placing a renamed copy of the file in the Startup folder (to find the location of that folder, look in the File Locations dialog box) should make the macros globally available. (I'm assuming that MacWord works the same as WinWord in this respect.)

I copied from my desktop to a thumb drive, then to library/application support/microsoft/office/user templates/normal.dotm

Really has me baffled

Does that mean you are replacing the Normal file already in that folder (Word always has a file named "Normal")?

Tried both renaming the file that was in User Templates and overwriting the existing file. Neither worked.

Replacing the Normal file isn't recommended, but adding to the Startup folder should definitely work. The assumption is that the file added is a macro-enabled template.

Ok, I'll give that a try. You have any idea where th startup folder is on a Macbook Pro?

Think I found the right folder in library/launchagents. Pu normal.dotm there, but it didn't work. Don't know why this is so difficult.
