Default Hard space in justified text

Hi.

I'm having trouble with formatting my document using hard space. (using Word 2007)

What I want to do is to prevent some 1-2 letter words from appearing at the end of the line. For example:
"my friend" - I dont want to have Word brake the line between theese two words, so I replace standard space with a hard space. It works, with one big issue.

My text is justified, so space between words is dynamic - except for hard space. In effect line looks like this:
Quote:
"my_friend_____text_____text_____text"
This is even more noticable if I add some text at start:
Quote:
"text_____text_____text_____my_friend_____text____ _text"
(underlines are as spaces of course, this forum cuts multiple spaces)

This is unacceptable for me. Of course I can use shift-enter, but this would be not good in case I add some text to the paragraph later on.

Is there any way to make a hard space adjust to the dynamic word spacing in justified text? If not, then what else should I do?

Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

Word treats hard spaces as fixed-width characters, so they won't give the same kind of dynamic spacing between characters as ordinary spaces. I'd recommend only inserting them where it's really necessary - after the rest of your editing is done, and starting from the first line in each paragraph.

Thanks for Your reply.

I have to admit, I'm a bit disapointed. If I have to work manually, checking every end of the line, then it doesn't make practical difference if I use hard space or "soft enter". To be honest, I find "shift+enter" way faster than "delete => ctrl+shift+space"

So many tutorials over Internet say that you should use hard space when writing a publication instead of shift+enter, but nobody even bothered to say that it won't work on justified text (and most publications and books i've read HAVE justification)

Too bad.

And there I thought that with version 12 Office will bring me a new look on word processing
...at least styles work (ALMOST) great

Hi Peter,

Hard-spacing really should only be used to keep together things that shouldn't be separated; for example, a hyphen followng a word (someword - anotherword) or, perhaps to keep honorifics and names together (Mr Smith). Few would quibble over the spacing in such circumstances. I typically leave these kinds of refinement till I've finished editing, then use Find/Replace to ensure they're incorporated throughout the document.

Hard-spacing shouldn't be used to keep together words that needn't be on the same line for readability (eg: my friend). Using Ctrl-Enter can cause problems if you decide to edit the paragraph after doing so, as the manual line break could end up in the wrong logical place.

Well, maybe I used a bad example.

In Polish (my language) there are words that shouldn't be left at the an of the line. Such as "z" in a sentence "Dzięki nim korzystanie z Internetu staje się naturalne ..."

In this sentence - if I have to break the line, it should not be done between "z" and the next word. But at the same time, it shouldn't be trated as a character that has to be very close to the next word, like it would be desired in "5 kg" or "12 PM"

I hope I've written it in understandable way, I'm not too good with my wroten/spoken english anymore. (havent used it for a while )

Plus, it's 5 AM here

Hi Steve,

For the 'z':
Find = _z_
Replace = _z^s
where the _ is a normal space character. unless you want to make a lot of work for yourself, though, there's nothing much that can be done to balance the size of this space with all the other spaces on the line. Even so, unless you're working with short lines, few people would notice the difference in spacing.

With expressions like "5 kg" or "12 PM", those usually don't have spaces (ie "5kg" and "12PM"). nevertheless, if you want to keep them with spaces you can do so with wildcard Find/Replace searches, where:
Find = ([0-9]) (kg)
Replace = \1^s^2
and:
Find = ([0-9]) ([AP]M)
Replace = \1^s^2

Something that might help minimise the problem is if you go to Word Options > Compatability Options > Layout Options and check the option to 'Do full justification the way Wordperfect 6.x for Windows does'. This allows Word to reduce the size of the normal space to fit an extra word on the line if it will fit without reducing the space too much.
