Default trimming excess image data in Word document

Is there a way to get Word to trim all unnecessary image data when saving a file? I noticed that when I paste a huge image into Word, I can shrink down the size of the image on the screen, but when I save it, the combined size of the Word file is that of the image file (a JPG) plus that of the Word file before the image was inserted, plus a bit of extraneous stuff. Obviously, Word is preserving all the data that was in the original image file even though not all of it is used/shown in the document. Is there a way to tell Word to throw out image data it isn't using or to save a copy of the image in the .doc file at the size it appears on the screen?
