How to edit custom fields in Word 2010?
I have upgraded from Word 2007 to 2010. I have started a document using a template created in W2007 which has custom document properties. These have a custom name, a data type and and a value.
I can't find how to amend the content/value of these fields, nor can I find how to insert new custom fields. If I use Edit Field dialogue I am not given the opportunity to change the field values. The File Info Prepare document dialogue no longer seems to offer the custom property editor. If I use the Insert - Quickparts - Insert Field, this now only offers me the ability to insert standard fields into the document How can I create or amend editable custom fields in Word 2010 preferably without using Visual Basic. A URL explaining how to do it would suffice. Last edited by DaveLevy; 12-12-2011 at 04:46 AM. Reason: added the VB qualifier. |

Some of the document properties are offered as content controls at Insert tab | Quick Parts | Document Property. You can insert the same field in multiple locations and all occurrences will all update instantly if you edit one of them. (The corresponding document property field at File tab | Info will also change in the process.)

Default vs. Custom Fields
It seems to me that the interface you describe only works for the docproperties defined by Microsoft i.e. the product author.
I want to use Custom and amend Custom Fields in Word 2010. For instance, when I use the "Edit Field" update dialogue for the "Title" field the interface offers me the opportunity to amend the field value, I cannot find the dialogue to amend a custom field. |

Yes, I'm referring to some built-in properties that make use of content controls. You can do the same with custom content controls, though. Take a look at http://gregmaxey.com/Mapped_Content_Control.htm.
If you want to repeat data using backward-compatible techniques, see http://gregmaxey.com/Repeating_Data.htm.

Custom Fields in Word 2010
This might help.
Select the FILE tag in the top menu toolbar Click on the Info option On the right hand side of the screen click the expand arrow next to the Properties text Select Advanced Properties You then get the Document Properties menu (as in 2007) Select the Custom tab And there you can add or modify your own document fields |

That'd be it. Thanks

This did not work for me. The fields I tried to add didn't show up in the fields list at all. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Ways to repeat data have already been mentioned in this thread (see http://gregmaxey.com/Mapped_Content_Control.htm and http://gregmaxey.com/Repeating_Data.htm).
You'll have to explain in detail what you're trying to do. __________________

What kinds of field? To see all fields in use in a document, toggle the field code display 'on' via Alt-F9.
