Default Using auto-hyphenation for the first time

I'm willing to give auto-hyphenation a try, so I'd like to know what is a good setting for the Hyphenation Zone? The default is .25". Also, is there a good book font/pitch combo that works well with this setting? I don't want to be distracted by heavy-handed hyphenation in my documents.
