Outline numbering: 2.1 coming out as 1.1

I need the following outline numbering in my Word document:

1 Stuff

2 More Stuff

2.1 Stuff about More Stuff

2.2 More Stuff about More Stuff

However, 2.1 is coming out as 1.1, as follows:

1 Stuff

2 More Stuff

1.1 Stuff about More Stuff

1.2 More Stuff about More Stuff

Presumably this is because there are no Level 2 headings under 1, but what's the solution to this?

You'll have to set up your outline properly using styles as explained at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ering2003.html.

Yeah, I'd already done that. In the end I started from scratch: the template I was using had been amended by various people over the years, so I created a new template and the problem has gone. Odd.

Sometimes a document needs a fresh start, so to speak. The underlying list formatting may have been (slightly) corrupt.
