Default Automatic link creation, after writing: Link text in main body (multiple instances)

I have a report where the main body will refer to unique identifying codes below photos in an appendix. The photos/unique identifiers are listed in the appendix only once. The unique code is what is referenced in the main report, and it may be referenced more than once in the report.

The report will be written independent of the appendix, and then the docs probably combined together after both are complete. I want to run a macro to have the references in the main report linked to where the unique reference is in the appendix.

This doesn't sound too novel, so maybe something exists already to do this?

Any pointers?

A prefab solution may exist but I haven't seen one. The logic to create it isn't undoable but it would likely require you to have well structured, consistent documents.

If you tag the main report references (eg by a Content Control or character style) and then use a specific paragraph style in the appendix, the macro could be made to run quite efficiently. I would recommend your macro then follows these steps:
1. Iterate through instances of the appendix identifier style and add a bookmark to each one.
2. While in the loop for #1, search the main report for the pointers that match your bookmarked content and replace it with a cross-reference to that bookmark.

OK, thanks. Thoughts are much appreciated. I'll have to think more about that one. As soon as VBA gets into looping, it goes over my head. My capability with making something work myself is limited
