To select text with the keyboard, you hold the shift key as you move with the arrow keys.
Some special 'selections' combine the Ctrl and Shift keys together
Ctrl-Shift-DownArrow to select to the end of the paragraph
Ctrl-Shift-RightArrow to select to next word end
Ctrl-Shift-HomeKey to select to top of document
Ctrl-Shift-EndKey to select to end of document
