How to learn VBA?
Hello. I am new to this forum, but I am impressed so far. I want to start using VBA, initially for Word. I have seen some useful threads in this forum, but the programming language is still confusing. The last time I programmed was with BASIC in the ‘80s. Since then, I have used Lotus123, Quattro, and now Excel. I have absolutely no experience with visual basic or VBA. I am looking at buying the book “VBA for Dummies”, to give me a leg up into using VBA. Is there a better, or easier, book for a beginner? Alternatively, what is the best way to learn VBA? |

Honestly, a lot of time and effort and having a project to drive you. I've been poking around in Word VBA to help automate processes, but it's taking some time to learn and it's still confusing me at times. Word VBA seems to be quite different than say Excel VBA. This forum and many others are absolutely valuable tools to help in your growth in Word VBA, but don't just ask random questions. Have a plan and a goal and why you need the VBA. I've noticed there isn't one answer in VBA, so maybe find the method that works for you and stick with it. Thru time and effort you might be able to pick up different ways to do the same thing.
Finally, use the macro recorder to explore what is happening. It may code somewhat inefficiently;, but it works. Thru time you will begin to see how you can clean-up what the macro recorder spits out. Below are a few resources that might help. Microsoft Word VBA Macro Programming - Introduction | Udemy https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/I...ncecheckbookA/ Microsoft Word MVP FAQ Microsoft Word FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions - Help with Microsoft Word Microsoft Word Help, Tips and Tutorials @ The Anchorage Graham Mayor - Word Pages Hopefully some of this helps. |

As for books, while it isn't dedicated to VBA, it has some good basic info and essential for customizing the ribbon. "RibbonX Customizing the Office 2007 Ribbon"

Dear Jeffrey,
Re your comment, “This forum and many others are absolutely valuable tools to help in your growth in Word VBA, but don't just ask random questions. Have a plan and a goal and why you need the VBA.” I fully agree, and had already detailed my objective and asked for help in another thread. This thread was deliberately a bit of shotgun approach, and thank you for the valuable information. Frans |

A couple of more book recommendations:
Mastering VBA for Microsoft Office 365 by Richard Mansfield Writing Word Macros: An Introduction to Programming Word using VBA: PhD Steven Roman I thought the Udemy online course was worthwhile. Do not expect a lot of interaction with the instructor, though. |

While I really like online resources, books have their place. I can find something in a book that it would take me forever to find among my web resources, and I have lots of resources! If nothing else, having the proper term or jargon can make an online search much more productive. |

Btw, I do have an esoteric collection of books to fill the gaps. And for some subjects, paper can't be beat. |
