Default After Win7 to Win10 I have "MISSING references"

Hi again....

My Win7 Desktop PC went to the great recycling yard in the sky, and I have a new Windows 10 PC.
It came with a 30 day trial of Office 365, which I uninstalled and instead installed my previously purchased version of Office 2010.

On attempting to execute some Word VBA, I got dire warnings about needing PtrSafe on some Function declarations (why??? - my Win 7 pc was 64 bit, and the Win 10 is 64 bit - ???).

Having edited the declarations to include PtrSafe, when Recompiling I get "Can't find Project or Library", and in my References I have "MISSING: Microsoft Windows Common Controls-2 6.0 (SP6)".

I've tried Googling this Reference, but to no avail.

I can uncheck it to stop the error, but should I actually be installing it?

Does anyone know what it is, what it does, and if I need it?

You shouldn't need to use PtrSafe unless you installed the 64 bit version of Office 2010 and frankly if you did so you would be better uninstalling it and installing the 32 bit version.
Microsoft Windows Common Controls-2 6.0 (SP6) is provided by C:\Windows\SysWOW64\MSCOMCTL.OCX It is no longer included with Windows 10, but you can download and install the missing file. It is not compatible with the 64 bit version of Office.

Thanks for the reply Graham.

If you have time, could you please explain why you feel it is better to use the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit version?

I tend to think "If you've got it, use it", but other favourite mantras are
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
and lyrics from a Jack Bruce song (Something to live for)
Nothing but strangeness
That wastes
Anything it replaces

Sincerely,

The 32 bit version of Office 2010 was recommended by Microsoft for most users. The 64 bit has compatibility issues, as you have already discovered, and speed issues which you may not yet have. These are compromises that Excel users may be willing to accept to be able to address huge worksheets, but 64 bit addressing does not aid Word at all.
