Combining variables and hidden text
I basically want a simple single sourced document.
I want to keep all my content in one document, but I have at least 4 versions of this document. - one with everything (content, questions, answers, editorial notes) - one with 3 of the variables (content, questions, answers) - one with 2 of the variables (content, questions) - one with 1 of the variables (content) I had thought of creating 4 styles for each version. I was wondering if there is a way to combine this with hidden text option on the styles? I haven't programmed in a long time, so I was wondering if this is possible or just beyond the capabilities of Word. |

If you create one source document with all of the content and bookmark each of your contents, questions, answers, & editorial notes, you can create subsidiary documents with whichever part(s) of the source document you want, via INCLUDETEXT fields that reference those bookmarks. No management system for documents!
I had thought about conditional processing but without a document management system of some sort, managing multiple files is going to be error prone.

I doubt a single document with hidden text is going to work. For starters, whether text that's hidden can be seen and/or printed, depends entirely on how the user has Word configured; you have no control over that. They could (intentionally or otherwise) configure Word to display hidden text and/or to print hidden text (yes, Word can be configured to print hidden text even if it's not visible on-screen). Still if that what you want to try, simply create three Styles, one each for questions, answers, & editorial notes, then apply those Styles to the corresponding ranges. Changing the font attribute to 'hidden' or 'not hidden' for any of those Styles will be sufficient to toggle the 'hidden' state for all content in that Style.
