Macros created, but then disappear
I work in the legal field and really rely on macros. I come from a WP background, but have been using Word 2013 with a Windows 7 OS for the last few months. I have finally figured out how to records macros and have done so. However, when I close out Word and reopen, my macros are gone. I am saving them in Normal.dotm. I know the macros are working because I can run them until I close out Word -- then they are gone.
I do not know how to set up a template to store my macros in (this was one suggestion I received from someone before I found this forum). If someone can help me or tell me how to find a work around, I would be very grateful. Thank you. |

If they are gone it is because you haven't saved the normal template (or you have saved it and your company log-in procedure creates a new clean normal template).
Start by ensuring that the normal template is saved. Close Word (and Outlook). Press CTRL+ALT+Esc and make sure that there are no hidden Word processes still running (Winword.exe). If there are close them from the dialog. Ensure that there are no orphaned temporary files http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm Re-start Word. From File > Options > Advanced > Save. Check 'Prompt before saving Normal template' and 'Always create backup copy'. OK out of the dialog Start the macro recorder. Type a word. Stop the macro editor. Close the document without saving. Close Word. You should get a prompt to save the normal template. Save it. Re-open Word. Is the macro still listed?

First, if you are like most WP users, you are using macros to record a bunch of text to insert. In Word, the tool for this is AutoText, not macros. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to AutoText.
Word for Word Perfect Users Automated Boilerplate Using Microsoft Word Second, chances are that you have a poorly-written Add-In installed that is blocking the saving of changes to the normal template. See Add-Ins in Microsoft Word. Basic Concepts of Microsoft Word - from Shauna Kelly I will be back with ideas for distributing your AutoText and macros. You do not want to be copying normal.dotm to someone else's computer! |

If you are distributing your macros and AutoText, you want to store these in a separate template to be used as a Global Template. Such a template, when stored in the Word Startup Folder makes its macros, keyboard shortcuts, and AutoText available in all documents.
