Default Workaround to have UserForm open from Web Link

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and hoping someone can help me.

I have created a number of Word documents, that have a userform. The idea was to have these put on our company's website, and have staff click on the hyperlink, fill out the userform and print the document.

So, it seems that to stop malicious code being executed, this isn't a possibility (i.e. the internet/intranet automatically disables Macro's executing code).

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this issue, and how you got around it?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Kirsti

Hi Kirsti,

Your users should be able to download the document before opening, then the macro will run - provided they allow it and their security settings aren't too high. In other words, anything relying on macros is at the mercy of the end-user.

Is there a reason you need a userform, rather than working with formfields in the document?

Thanks macropod.

I am actually not really a 'word' user, I usually work in databases, but I inherited a bunch of standard letters, where there were these annoying pop-up boxes to populate the date, address, etc etc & I thought there had to be a better way, and discovered userforms.

So, I'm not familiar with formfields, but I'll look into them, otherwise figure out how we can get the user to download the document before opening it.

Thanks.

This is usually done by right-clicking on an object and choosing 'Save target as'.

LOL sorry, brain not funtioning properly when I wrote that obviously.

The point of putting the documents on the Intranet in the first place is to discourage staff from saving docs on their C drive and manipulating them. I know we can never stop this behaviour, but we want to do what we can to stop it, hence the userform, and the hyperlink.

So, no, the boss won't be encouranging staff to download the documents to enable the macros to execute.

With the protection methods available, most users can be prevented from changing anything that shouldn't be changed. Another approach, which few users could get around, would be to use secure PDFs. That'll require a completely new approach, but it does have the benefit of allowing you to lock them down so tight they can't be printed or their contents copied (if that's what you want to do).

Doesn't your boss realise that, once the document's open, the users can save it locally anyway, and then work on it?

I'm not too familiar with PDF's, but from what I do know I don't think it would suit our purposes, as the content does need to be edited (i.e. situation specific information added).

My boss does realise that once the document is open, users can save it locally and work on it, he is just wanting to put things in place to discourage that. i.e. if they open a hyperlink & then fill in a userform and print it, then *hopefully* they won't!

Hi Kirsti,

PDFs support fields for the addition of 'situation specific information'.

Word has a similar feature (formfields) that allows you to restrict input to just the formfields and other areas of the document you specifically designate as unprotected. See attached.
