Wrap text in table
Dear All,
I am using word 2007 and in order to improve my skills, I try different situations which I can try to explain myself. The following I partially explain: 1) I have inserted a table 2) I have unchecked, in table options, automatically resize to fit contents 3) I have unchecked, in cell options, wrap text. At this moment I have expected the cell not to resize any more, but instead the row is increasing as I enter text. this is because the height of the row is set with "at least" dimension instead of "exactly"? if this is true and I set row height with exactly, I see no difference in cell behaviour when checking / unchecking wrap text. so, wrap text is useless in this situation? Thank you, Andrei |

Hi Andrei,
To prevent text wrapping, you need to set an exact line height AND uncheck the 'wrap text' option. Word 2003 & 2010 work the same way.

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your answer, I am aware of this. the problem is that if I set row height with "exactly" even if the wrap text is checked the cell does not resize it. so, wrap text is useless when I set dimension with exactly, is this correct? Cheers, Andrei |

Set the row to "exactly" and re-check that "automatically resize to fit contents" is not checked.
Another thing to look at: Did you specify a Preferred Width for your column? If you set an exact height and a preferred width then the cell size should not change. |

yes, this is the exact situation:
an exact height and a preferred width then the cell size should not change, even if wrap text is checked / unchecked, so it is useless in this case, correct? |

The purpose of having the ability to uncheck the 'wrap text' feature is for web table production. It was introduced with Word 2000 and has always functioned this way.
In any other case (eg an ordinary document), for the text wrapping to respond to unchecking 'wrap text', you need to clear the “Preferred width” check box on the Column tab of the Table Properties dialog box. However, if a cell occupies the full width of its container, then the text will still wrap to the next line.

thank you for your answers.
anyway, in my opinion, the wrap / non-wrap check box beahaviour is "inconsistent", not to say useless in MS word tables. Regards, Andrei |

So if the text didn't wrap, what would you want it to do - spill over the end into the next cell and maybe even off the page? Or maybe you'd prefer the excess to disappear?
