Default Partial highlighting of text in a row in "Final Showing Markup" setting

Hi,

I have a Word document that contains several tables. The document is constantly edited, so it is set to "Final Showing Markup" so the reader understands which sections of the document have changed since last viewing.

For some reason, part of the text in some of the cells appear to be set to bold, even though the toolbar indicates that it isn't. The last line of the cell is never bold, while all other lines in the cell are. When I change the setting to "Final", the text no longer appears highlighted. It's not terribly important, but I don't want the reader to get the impression that the bold text (which isn't really bold) is particularly important or is different than the last time it was read.

I added attachments. The first shows the bold text (and non-bold text) in a cell. The second shows what the cell looks like when I select the text in the cell.

Any help you can provide in removing or fixing this formatting is appreciated.

Hi Redpoint,

From your thumbnails, the text looks shaded to me, not bold. If this shading turns on/off as you select/deselect any of it, that suggests that what you have is a cross-reference field pointing to a location somewhere else in the document. These are used so that a change to the text in one place can be replicated in another without needing to type the same information in multiple locations. If you don't want the shading to appear when selected, or if you want it to show all the time, go to Word Options|Advanced > Show document content and change the 'Filed shading' option. Do note, though, that this will only affect how the document is displayed on your computer. How it displays on someone else's computer will depend on their computer's settings.

Thanks for the response Paul.

I gave your solution a try but unfortunately it didn't work. Just to be clear, the first attachment is the cell containing the problematic bold text (as well as the non-bold text in the last line). The second attachment is the same text as it looks when I've selected the text, as you do for something like copying and pasting. I thought it might be useful to show that the shaded part for the bold text is a little bit darker than the shaded part for the non-bold last line.

It might be hard to see in the attachments, and I probably should have explained that better. I originally noticed the shading difference because I highlighted the text thinking I could just deselect the bold button and resolve the issue.

Hi Redpoint,

On the basis of your clarification, I'd be checking the 'Track Changes' settings. It seems like the setting for inserted text might be set to 'bold', which won't show up via a check of the font formatting (since the underlying text isn't actually bold).

The reason I mis-read your original post is that I interpreted the second image as reflecting what happens when you select a field and the 'when selected' option for field shading is active.

Thanks, it has for some reason gone away. It's on a common server so maybe someone else fixed it.

Thanks for the help,

Ben
