Default Word tables and excel paste link - problems with update link

Hi,

I am using the paste link function to link multiple instances of Excel cell ranges to make tables in Word that can then be updated if there are any subsequent changes in the source excel work book. Both the word document and the source excel file are in a Teams site and available in sharepoint.

In the majority of instances this is working without any problems.

In each word document there are about 24 of these excel linked tables.

But for the 'larger' tables where the cell ranges being used are a size of 4 columns and 80 rows I am having problems of them not updating.

Observations are:

(i) If 'Update all links on document open' is active

a) The program can take up to 10 minutes to update the tables from the source excel file. Sometimes Word becomes completely inactive and has to be closed using Task manager. If it does complete the document will not have updated the larger tables.

(ii) If 'Update all links on document open' is switched off:

a) I can manually right click each table and select 'Update Link'. For all but the largest tables this works fine. For the largest tables the operation will complete but the table will not have updated.

For either of the above, when the tables fail to update it has a strange effect on the document:

In the word view, the document is effectively truncated at the point of where the table failed to update. To explain, if the document is 28 pages long but the table is at page 16 you can no longer see the contents of pages 16-28. They no longer exist as far as Word is concerned and page numbers change to reflect this as well.

If you press 'Alt F9' you can then see all the document text and all the excel links that compose the tables. You can right click on them in this view and again select update tables and it will complete but it has no effect on the outcome.

Selecting the links manually in the 'Edit links' section doesn't help; Opening the source excel file using the link in the work document doesn't help either.

The net impact of this is that when ever the excel content changes for these tables you have to manually put them in to word as they wont update. This is sooooo infuriating that a function that has such potential falls over in this way.

Example link that works on Update Link:

{ LINK Excel.SheetBinaryMacroEnabled.12 "https://myteams.site.com/sites/Collaboration/Shared Documents/General/2022 Campaigns/Campaign.xlsb" 644!R68C3:R83C17 \a \f 5 \h \* MERGEFORMAT }

Example link that fails on Update Link:

{ LINK Excel.SheetBinaryMacroEnabled.12 "https://myteams.site.com/sites/collaboration/Shared Documents/General/2022 Campaigns/Campaign.xlsb" 644!R68C3:R83C17 \a \f 5 \h \* MERGEFORMAT }

Office version: 2108 (Build 14326.20784)

Can anyone advise or help?

Thanks in advance.

Trevor
