Angry large multi-table doc acting instable

We have several documents that are 200+ pages, for each document 95% is tables that span several pages. We are trying to figure out why Word is getting hung up processing them. We get lots of "Not responding" messages, and sometimes the tables seem to jump into the headers when scrolling through.

The tables are dense, but otherwise simple. We do use styles, but they are used the same with other smaller documents that don't have this issue. We can't figure out if there is a fix to help them perform better. There is definitely usage of "page break before" to keep specific data together visually - hopefully that isn't the issue.
