Default Table size changes on multiple pages

First time poster here.

For many years now, I've been using Word to create fold-over printed inserts for CDs. I have a template of a simple one row, two cell table, set to exactly the size and shape (basically, two squares) I want. Normally I just place text and pictures for what will form the 'outside' (when it's cut out and folded in half), with the 'inside' left blank.

Recently, however, I've been trying to create a double-sided insert, with additional text and pictures going on the inside of the folded paper.

I created an initial 'outside' design, then simply added a page break (in landscape mode), and placed an identically sized table on page two, containing the 'inside' text, etc.

I then printed the document- doubled sided, flip on short edge. Lining-up-wise, it worked perfectly, but to my surprise, I found that when I cut it out, the whole thing (both 'sides') had shrunk slightly (maybe by about 15% or so), and was too small for the plastic jewel case.

EDIT: Each of the two cells is set in table properties as 12cm x 12cm. That's exactly how a one page doc prints. But the two page version actually prints 11cm square cells.

What's causing this, and how can I avoid it?

Hoping someone can help.

Mike

EDIT 2: Well, I tried the obvious workaround. I set the cell sizes to 13cm x 13 cm. Lo and behold, it prints out 'correctly', i.e. as 12cm x 12cm. Not ideal, though - what IS going on, here?

With out seeing your document and knowing your print setup it's impossible to know for sure. Perhaps you have a mis-match between the page size in Word and the paper size in your printer and you have A4/letter resizing enabled?

Hi Paul, thanks for the response.

Here is what I've got (see attachments).

I set up initially a document called "One page test", with the two cell table as you see it. Printed it, and it came out as a perfect 24cm x 12cm.

I then saved the file as "Two page test". I added a page break after the table, and created an identical table on the second page. Printed double-sided, flip on short edge. What I got was two tables, both now shrunk down to 22cm x 11 cm. Additionally, if cut out, the top and bottom (horizontal) edges were lined up OK, but the left and right (vertical) edges were misaligned by about 5mm. My paper is A4.

Any ideas?

Screenshots aren't particularly helpful, which is why I mentioned seeing the document. You also haven't mentioned what paper size your printer is configured for - which may be different from the actual paper size - or whether you have Word configured to allow A4/Letter resizing.

Some anomalies with your table(s):
• its preferred width isn't set and it's allowed to automatically resize
• the row height is set to 'at least' 12cm, rather than 'exactly' 12cm.
• you don't need to create a page break and a new table for each page - simply tabbing out of the last cell will create a new page with a replica table structure, since it'll be part of the same table.

OK. I THINK I've implemented those suggestions. I also centred the table on the page, which at least fixed the left/right offset problem for the two different sides of the paper. But... it still shrinks down to 11cm squares when printed! I'm at a loss.

Doc attached.

Your table is still configured allowed to automatically resize to fit contents (see under Table Tools|Layout|Properties>Options, but that's probably not the issue. More likely is that you have a faulty printer driver. Try downloading the latest driver from the maker's website and installing that.

Right, I've updated all my printer drivers (HP5520).

The problem persists.

If I just print page 1 of the document, it prints out as correct 12cm x 12cm squares.

If I print the whole document (two pages) single-sided, they're again correct.

But if I print double-sided (whether flipping on long OR short side), they shrink to 11cm x 11cm. - so the problem clearly lies in the 'flip'.

I think I'm just going to have to stick with the workaround: have a 12x12 template for a single-sided insert, and a 13x13 one (that actually prints as 12x12) for double-sided.

Definitely something odd about your printer and/or its drivers. You might take it up with HP. Do be aware, though, that HP has a reputation for blaming MS for faults with HP products...

Yeah, I suspect you're right.

It would be interesting to know if anybody else has had similar experiences (I'm sure I'm not the only person making CD inserts using an HP printer).

Anyway, I can manage with my workaround, but thanks for your help.
