Default keyboarding slows lots when 75 page table used for timekeeping purposes

Forgive if I have asked for help that has been discussed before. I'm a newbie.
I have lengthy 75 pages of MS Word tables that I've crafted into crude timekeeping system for work. Its main function is that it must sort by three columns. Lately when I type in a new row, it goes very slowly, the words appear one, two or three seconds after I type them and the sorting function takes a very long time, much longer than a few months ago when the doc was perhaps 70 pp. Yet on other documents -- letters, pleadings, where there are no tables, everything works appropriately.

Ideas for fixing this problem -- other than the obvious about buying a commercial software package for timekeeping?

Sounds like your macro is constantly updating the document. Try running it after you have made changes or new entries.

Word's table performance has always been slow and becomes really noticeable on large tables and in documents with many tables. Turning off the 'Automatically resize to fit contents' option for each table can significantly improve performance, though. See: Table Tools|Layout|Properties>Table>Options.

Paul, I'm a novice. Where is "Table Tools|Layout|Properties>Table>Options" found in the MS Word ribbon?

Click on any table and the 'Table Tools' contextual tab will appear.

I have. It goes slower.

I'm not sure how any macro is working on this large table. If it is, it is unintentional.

Thanks. I did. The "automatically resize to fit contents" button was unchecked. Should I check it??

You should ensure that option is unchecked on all the tables. I think Kilroy's reference to a macro might have been a case of misdirection.

A macro was the only thing I could think of. I routinely work with tables longer than 75 pages and the only time it lags is when something is updating. At what point is your sort function happening?

I enter data in each row, and then I do a manual sort. Blank rows pop to the top of the sort when its done right. I have several blank rows that are not going to the top which tells me the sort isn't working. Should I turn off the macros on this file and then sort?

I think for everyone here, if there is a macro in the document it is better to share it so an evaluation can take place. A copy of the document if possible.

Well, now I feel stupid. There were some unmerged cells about half way through the Word document, and a gap between the first half and second half of the form with three Paragraph marks between them. Fixed those, re-ran the sort. Naturally, it works like it is supposed to work. GIGO rule, right?

Royal Typewriters were easier to figure out. I have one, somewhere.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Of course, if you used Excel - as I expect most people would (to take advantage of its calculation abilities, etc.) - you wouldn't have this problem.
