Unable to add a line directly above a table
Hi all,
Hopefully someone can give me some pointers on how to fix this problem. I have, for the past 3 years, been compiling documentation for my employer, but keep getting caught out by this annoying "feature". Most of the document consists of tables. Above each table, at the top of the page, I want a blank line (not a blank table row). I will use this to insert a title that will appear in the Navigation view. However, Word keeps reformatting the document so that the blank line is moved to the bottom of the previous page and the table is moved to the top of the page. Sometimes it does what I want, and my top line remains above the table, but usually it moves it to the bottom of the previous page. This seems to be irrespective of the table height; tables are often aligned to the top of the page with plenty of blank space underneath them. If anyone can help me format this document as I want, I would be most grateful. |

You could do any of the following to the relevant paragraph break (i.e. blank line):
1. Insert a manual page break before it; or 2. Format it with the 'keep with next' attribute; or 2. Format it with the 'page break before' attribute.

Thanks for the reply, but none of those work.
They all result in the same outcome - (Previous page) (Page break) Blank Line (Page break added by Word) Table. Oddly, I have exactly the same paragraph setting in the situations that work as those that don't work. |

If the problem is what you described, any of them works...

Here's a screen shot, showing one that's not working and one that is.
Could there be anything else causing the paragraph formatting to not work, such as the style properties? |

It's impossible to tell from your screenshots what's going on in the document. We can't even tell what you're applying the paragraph formatting to.
Obviously, though, if your tables are too large to fit on a page with a paragraph space before and have their own 'keep with next paragraph' formatting, nothing else is going to fit. Likewise, if you have the table's text wrapping set to 'around', your empty paragraph is liable to disappear behind the table instead of pushing it down the page.

I think I have solved the problem.
When I add a new table to my document, I often copy the top row of another table, and then Insert rows below it to build it up. This seems to be what causes Word to separate the table from the row above it. I have found if I create a new table by copying an entire table, and using that as a template for a new table, then Word keeps the table and the blank row above it all together. Thanks for your help. |

Dave if you put the cursor in any cell in the first row of a table and press Ctrl+Shift Enter you will get an empty line above the table. This method can also be used to split a table. If you put the cursor in any row and press Ctrl+Shift Enter you will split the table above that line.
