Default the alignment of successive lines in a cell

In my Microsoft Word 2010, the successive lines in a cell (after typing Enter) align with the symbols (of the line above) that follow (1) an entry followed by (2) a period and (3) a space (e.g., 1. ).

This is all fine and good, except that in some instances, I would like the successive lines in a cell (after typing Enter) to align with the first symbol of the line above, which in my example above, is the numeral 1.

Example:

1. PHRASAL
PREPOSITIONAL
VERB

Does anyone know how I achieve the Example?

In the attachment, I achieved it in one cell, starting with 2. PREPOSITIONAL VERB. Please don't ask me how I achieved it: I don't know how I achieved it.

In my Microsoft Word, typing 1. does not achieve an indentation, but typing 1. followed by a space creates an indentation which I don't want.

This is basic paragraph formatting and has nothing to do with the use of tables/cells as such.

I suggest taking a look at http://addbalance.com/usersguide/basic_formatting.htm, where you'll find some material that will help you get to grips with how to use Word.

Apparently Firefox doesn´t like something about the connection at addbalance.com. (See attachments.)

Try Basic Formatting in Microsoft Word.

Note, the "http:" instead of "https:"

Specifically, you are looking at the element of paragraph formatting called "Indents."

Generally, in a numbered list, one wants the numbers offset from the text, including text that follows on other lines before the next number.

Automatic numbering in Word is deceptively complex. For anything other than the simplest document, it is generally best done attached to styles as described in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

For other ways of numbering, see Numbering in Microsoft Word, especially the SEQ field.
