Colored Rectangle in Column
I have a table with three columns. The first and third columns just have text. In the second column I want to put a simple colored square/rectangle that is centered within the cell. In the third column we often put a lot of text that extends the size of the cell. I want the colored shape in the second cell to automatically expand as the size of the third column expands. Can anyone tell me how to do this. Thanks in advance for any help.

Why not just shade the cell(s)?

Because the rest of the table already has shaded cells so it does not stand out enough.

Unless you're planning to use gradients, textures, etc. in the rectangle (which your first post indicates is not what's intended), there's no colouring you can achieve via one that can't be achieved by cell shading, so the fact other cells are shaded is not a valid argument. Regardless, there is no way you can make a rectangle auto-resize to accommodate changes in the underlying cell's size.

I tried making a single-cell table within one cell of a larger table. I shaded the single-cell table and started pasting text into it. As the text got longer, the shaded single-cell table grew, as did the cell of the larger table that was holding the shaded single-cell table. Would this achieve what you want?
