Need to add columns that match other column cell size
I'm working with a document I was given. There are currently 4 columns with cells of a certain size. When I try to insert a new column, it comes in with cells that are twice as dense as the existing cells (e.g.2x as many cells as the existing column). How can I match to what is already there?

You image suggests you have a table with many merged/split cells. The column insertion is trying to allow for that.

Any suggestions to match the new cells to the old?

You could split an existing column vertically.
