Copy a cell's contents across many cells
I could potentially do the same overall task in Excel but it present lots of problems using Excel and it becomes more ugly. The cell's contents are a table and I'd like it copied to many cells in the same column. I have Word 2007. How do I do that? |

Highlight the cells you want copied by clicking the first cell and dragging your cursor to the end point, then right-click and select copy. Simple as that...

Clarification- I meant part of a cell.
That works for a full cell's contents (if you select the whole cell) but not for part of cell's contents (I only need part of one cell to be copied). Basically the main table will a calendar and the subtable will be a schedule.

Well, you did describe what you wanted to do as copying a cell's contents, not only some of those contents. For the latter, copy the part & paste into one cell, then do as JimP suggested for the remainder.

Cell contents not cells
I just checked your solution and that sort of works but it doesn't because it overrides the previous cell contents. JimP's answer was really how to copy a cell into multiple cells not its actual contents (e.g. if the new cells had anything in them they would lose what they contain) and it seems it is hard to get Word 2007 to stop treating any paste object as a complete cell so it deletes any pasted into cell's previous contents. Is there a solution? A clumsy alternative would be how to convert a table so that the start text of any cell is a calendar.

You really do need to be clear about what you want to do. You're now up to the third iteration...
For what you're now describing, a macro would be needed but, even then, it's not exactly clear what your expectations are.

Let's start with the goal
I want to end up with a calendar with subtables that are schedules- many subtables are identical or have parts that are the same. Each cell will have its date- I'd prefer that it start with the dates in each cell of the table- lots of calendar formats in Word. Second preference is start with all subtables set up and add dates.

You might do better to use multiple cells for each date (you can delete any unwanted inter-cell borders). That way, you could do the kind of copy/paste discussed in previous posts. This would also simplify future maintenance of the table should there be any need to change the replicated data.
Otherwise, without seeing your document and a detailed explanation of what is required, it wouldn't be possible to craft a macro - which could only replicate the data as a once-off exercise - and, even then, it probably wouldn't be worthwhile (writing the macro might take longer than doing the job manually).

An Example Timetable
If I have to do individual cells then I might as well use Excel- it has Smart Fill down (easier to work with but not as nice to look at) and it has some the same general cell format abilities. (it is three months of timetable to see how much)
For most weeks: Monday's (same for Wed and Friday) column has the same sub-table every day. Tuesday has the same times but different classes and teachers. Thursday has the same times, classes and teacher for the morning. |

For Monday, Wednesday & Friday, you could bookmark the sub-tables for each, then insert cross-references to their bookmarks wherever you want the sub-tables replicated. Likewise for Thursday mornings (you'd need a separate sub-table for Thursday afternoons). That would leave only Tuesdays & Thursday afternoons requiring individual attention. Even then, if the times are the same, you could create one sub-table for each, which you replicate via copy/paste, then fill in only the variable details.

I said in general
Note I said generally, even my current timetable has some variation on that in October and I need something that is modifiable for print use- it has varied in the past like shorter times on some days and the periods all changed around. I guess I am going to need to use Excel unless the date can be a dynamic field that depends upon the row and column number in the main table then I can copy the whole cell and paste in many places.

If you want dynamic dates, Excel is a far better tool. To see what would be involved in Word, check out my Microsoft Word Date Calculation Tutorial, at:
http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...ation-Tutorial or: http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm#Third_party In particular, look at the item titled 'Calculate a Date Sequence'.

I meant only a spatially dynamic field not a chronologically dynamic field like a fixed calendar.
I checked the Windows Secrets one and doesn't work correctly today's date comes out right but not other modified forms of dates- I don't whether its because theirs is not designed for Word 2003 or that my computer is Japanese version. I thought of another option is create calendar using template, delete columns for weekends, add columns for the schedules- fill down using JimP's instructions. Save then save as another document and then consider removing the column boundaries. I found this for removing column boundaries. http://www.wordbanter.com/showthread.php?t=44565 and then found the eraser tool and this solves it- it seems it always puts the date at the top and table at the bottom- is that always right? Thanks for all your replies. |
