Default Word 2016 (Windows) How Does Banding Work?

I see the Banded Rows/Banded Columns checkboxes in Table Design, I see the Apply formatting to option in the modify Style dialog, I see the banding dialog in the format submenu.

What I can't do is figure out how the controls work. I can get a banded table using an existing style, but I can't create a new style with banding, nor can I apply banding to an existing table.

Generally pretty good at sorting this stuff out, but this one's got me stumped.

Thanks in advance...

OK, starting to sort this out. I'm sure Microsoft has had some less intuitive functions, but not many.

Thanks for the help. The link provides info on table styles, but no detail on how to apply or modify banding; no worries though...I'm slowly but surely sorting it out.

By way of introduction, I've been a technical writer for about 16 years, but used FrameMaker as my primary authoring tool. I've recently started a new job where I'm using Word 2016. I'm developing a format for the documentation, and thus have dived into the wonderful world of word styles.
