Default Word 10 Tables: Column to auto number 1.1, 1.2 etc in sequential rows

How do you auto number in MS Word 10 tables?
I have a column where I want the row sequence auto number and to look like:

1.1
1.2
1.3
etc in consecutive rows and for numbering to auto correct if I add a row in the middle of the sequence.

Simply select the rows and, from the multi-level list format button in the Paragraph group on the Ribbon's Home tab, choose the 1.1 format, then change the list level to the second one.

Default Complex automated numbering in Word tables

Still having difficulties with automatic table numbering in word. Please see attached example of what I am currently doing manually but want to do automatically. More tables continue in the document and are numbered 2, 3, 4 and so on with numbering in accompanying table following the same sequence (i.e. 2.1, 2.1.1.; 2.2; 3.1, 3.1.1 and so on).

Table numbering in these documents is dynamic, not static and needs to change to suit the changing circumstances/line items/entries from month to month.

Any suggestions, please?

Your table doesn't use automatic numbering - the numbers are all static. The only auto-numbered content in your document is for the non-table paragraph:
1. General business from previous meetings requiring action

So does that mean that it cannot be done?

No, it just means you're not using it.

OK so the question is, how do I use it. What do I have to do to get complex auto numbering in a table as defined?

See attached. I've replaced your manual numbering with Word's Heading Styles using multi-level list numbering. Adding a new row to the table will result in that row's numbering incrementing. Changing the heading level will re-set the numbering accordingly.

For instructions in setting up & using multi-level list numbering, see: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html
