I would like to know how to number table cells in Word 2013, especially from a starting point within a row and continuing from there.

You might try selecting the cells, then clicking on the 'Numbering' button on the Ribbon's home tab.

Yes, I've tried that, and it can work, I think, if you want to start numbering with the first cell of any row. But I would like to start with something other than the first cell of any given row, like the second or third, and so on, and after that I am supposing there would be a way to stop the numbering at an end point, such as 1-20, and any cells after that point would be left without numbering.

Whether you start from the first cell or some other cell is of no consequence for the approach I described. Likewise for the last numbered cell.

Here's the thing, when I select within a row, that is all I can do. The rest of the table selects separately, and of course there is no way to end selection in the middle of a row. I was thinking there should be a more simple way to go about this.

Could you explain how you think it is possible to select a group of cells from the entire table of cells, because I cannot?

That's quite wrong. You can start selecting cells anywhere in a table and extend that selection left/right/up/down to encompass other cells within the table, ending wherever you like. You can even start/stop the selection outside the table if you wish; only then does the selection necessarily encompass entire rows.

That's very nice you seem to have it working for you, but you are not explaining how this is done.

I have tried left click hold and dragging, but it just doesn't work. I just tried the "Shift" key like when selecting multiple consecutive files, but that did not work either.

Is there something wrong with my document format or setup? How do you select these cells within the table? Can you explain exactly how you do this?

Given that selecting one or more cells is no different to selecting one or more words, I hardly think it requires much explanation. Simply left-click on where you want to start the selection then drag the cursor to where you want to end the selection. The apply the numbering as previously advised. Done.

It does for me and, I expect, for anyone else who follows the instructions.

Here is a link to an image I uploaded showing what happens when I left click and drag the cursor to gather the group of cells I would like to number.
http://i.imgur.com/WjEaUXk.png

The cursor will not go to the left of the starting point, which I marked with an "X", it only selects anything after and directly below. Meaning, I could not start in column 5 and end with say, the last cell in column 6, because it would select the entire column 6 column. To put it simply, it will only select in complete blocks (of cells), and only to the direct right of the starting point.

That's not the same as your contention that

Of course you can't expand the selection to the left of the first selected cell when using the mouse (unless you hold down the Shift key), but neither do you need to select all the cells to the right of the selected cells if you don't want to number all columns to the right. In that case, don't select them - you can simply drag the cursor down. If you want to number cells to the left of the cell that's numbered on the first row, simply make another selection after doing the first block and repeat the process. The numbering sequence will update to reflect the newly-numbered cells.

I am attaching another link to show you what I get when following your instructions.
http://imgur.com/TfFNem5

"X" marks the starting point for the first selection of cells, the cells numbered 1-4 are the second selection of cells, and the cells numbered 1-8 are the third set of cells selected.

I cannot, as you say, hold the "shift" key and select anything to the left of my starting point, as in a continuation of left and right together from starting point. I can select either directly left of starting point or directly right of starting point just as before. Holding the "shift" key has no effect.

As to the numbers updating, I don't know how that could be done. As you can see I have three separate numbered sections.

Also, the double digit numbers do not want to center within the cell, rather they want to align "right" with the single digit numbers.

See attached.

I first selected the yellow cells, then applied auto-numbering to them. Next, I selected the green cells and applied auto-numbering to them. Finally, I selected the blue cells and applied auto-numbering to them. As you can see, the auto-numbering updates with each iteration.

I have no idea what you're doing.

Ok, I have resigned myself to the fact that there is no easy way to select a group of cells within a table of cells; only a fandangled "auto-numbering" work-around to achieve this.

So, I have completed my "calendar" project, but I have been left with this other very annoying disfunctional end to it all.

With all cells numbered and in place, and the document saved and printed, I thought I would like to empty the cells of the numbers, but unbelievably, there is no way to do this. I can only delete one number at a time, but on the other hand, if I would like to change the font color for a single number, I cannot, I can only change the font color for all the numbers.

I realize I can just select and auto-number over the numbered cells, but I really can't understand why it is not possible to clear the table, and also why I cannot change the color of a single auto-number entry instead of all auto-number entries only.
