Default Text position in merged table cells - word 2010

When I merge two cells in a Word 2010 table, the text in the merged cell appears in a vertical column. I'd like the text to be on one line with a space between each word.

To be specific, I want to merge First Name cells with Last Name cells and get Joan Green or John Brown inside each merged cell instead of
Joan
Green
or
John
Brown

Is there any way to do that?

Thanks.
