Default Table Autofit Behavior Default

I assume that when I create a table in WORD, the default Autofit behavior is Fixed Column Width. It doesn't seem to be. It seems to default to Autofit to Content (i.e. the cells move to accommodate text). I go in and try to change it (Table>Insert>Table and under Autofit behavior ensure that Fixed Column Width is selected and press OK. Defaults back to cells moving to accommodate the text or (Autofit to Contents)
Any idea as to what is going on? I'm using Windows XP Home Edition with Microsoft Office WORD 2003.
Thanks,

Henri
